Review of Mitsubishi Lancer 2013

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer is a small sedan available in DE, ES, SE, GT and Ralliart trim levels (the high-performance Lancer Evolution is reviewed separately). The base DE comes with 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, a tilt-only steering wheel, full power accessories, a trip computer and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player. The ES adds chrome exterior accents, air-conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry, upgraded cloth upholstery, a 60/40-split rear seat, front and rear center armrests, a height-adjustable driver seat, steering-wheel audio controls and an auxiliary audio jack. The SE trim gains a more powerful engine, all-wheel drive, special roof rack mounts and the Alloy Wheel package. Many features of the upper trims are also available on the lower trims via options or packages. There are also several appearance packages for the DE and ES that add sporty enhancements such as a front airdam, rear spoiler and chrome exhaust outlet.

Powertrains and Performance
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, powers the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer DE and ES. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. The Lancer SE and GT upgrade to a 2.4-liter four that makes 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through an automated dual-clutch manual transmission with shift paddles and an active center differential.

Safety
Standard safety features on all 2013 Mitsubishi Lancers include front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Antilock brakes and stability control are standard across the board, but four-wheel disc brakes are standard only on the SE, GTS and Ralliart.

Interior Design, Driving impressions and Special Features
Its interior design and materials drag down the car's overall appeal. Overall, the cabin design is uninspiring and rife with hard plastic elements. The upper trim level's padded door inserts help, but the lingering down market feeling persists. On the other hand, the rear seats are quite comfortable, with a generous amount of legroom. With a decent amount of comfort and a quiet cabin, a 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer equipped with the base 2.0-liter engine is powerful enough for the daily commute. For those seeking a bit more excitement on a budget, the SE or GT are better alternatives thanks to more low-end engine power and a suspension that responds better to spirited driving. Japan eyes reform of auto market as trade talks loom

Japan sees urgency in overhauling policies that favor domestic industries such as automakers as it seeks to revive the economy and join talks on a Pacific-region trade deal, the government's ambassador to the United States said."For the first time, people are seriously thinking that we need to change some things," Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae said today during a Bloomberg Government breakfast in Washington. "Otherwise we will become second-rate citizens of the world."Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is seeking to end 15 years of deflation in the world's third-largest economy through regulatory reform and fiscal and monetary stimulus policies that are known as Abenomics. Japan next month will join 11 nations negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free-trade agreement that will create a region with annual economic output of $26 trillion. The American Automotive Policy Council, representing Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Chrysler Group, opposes Japan's inclusion in the talks, saying the government in Tokyo manipulates its currency to favor exports and shuts out foreign competitors. The yen has depreciated 23 percent against the dollar since September."The government can't really manipulate these exchange rates, to be frank," Sasae said. "We haven't really intervened for some time to the market because it's impossible to control."Perceptions of Japan as an inward-looking society favoring domestic industries are "out of date," he said.

While the 11 nations in the Pacific talks seek to reach an agreement by the end of the year, adding an economy with $5.9 trillion in annual output may complicate the process. The U.S. Trade Representative's office also has cited some of Japan's agricultural policies, including protections for rice farmers, as barriers. Sasae said he doesn't expect Japan's participation to slow down negotiations. "There are some concerns expressed that Japan is coming late, so there might be some delay of the process," he said. "I don't think we are going to do it because I think basically our market is open."Sasae said reaching an agreement this year with Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam is achievable."That is a very ambitious target, probably, but I don't think that that is an impossible task," he said. Resurgent economy bolsters foreign car sales in Japan

For months, U.S. and European automakers have been fretting about the impact of the tumbling yen on local sales. Without doubt, the shrinking yen makes Japanese exports more profitable and increases their allure in overseas markets. But here's the flip side they don't complain about: Import sales in Japan are soaring. Sales of foreign brand vehicles climbed 18 percent in May and are up 12 percent for the year. Normally a weaker yen would make those imports more expensive. Yet, the same economic policies that are talking down the yen have also pumped up the overall economy and -- importantly -- the Japanese stock market. The economic blitzkrieg has been dubbed "Abenomics" after its architect, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Indeed, the benchmark Nikkei stock index has been on a rampage. It has rocketed 53 percent in the last 12 months.

For months, US and European automakers have been fretting about the impact of the tumbling yen on local ales. Without doubt , the shrinking yen makes Japanese exporters more profitable and increases their allure in overseas in 12 year of time period it can be swear down as per the demand the same economies policies of the Japanese people that they have. On May 22, it hit a five-year high, though it has since lost some ground. Pundits say many of those stock market gains are being plowed into conspicuous consumption in the form of pricey foreign cars. In addition, when we say foreign cars, we mainly mean European. Mercedes-Benz sales rose 59 percent in May and are up 22 percent for the first five months. BMW and Audi were up 18 and 19 percent last month respectively. Even Volvo rose 20 percent. Sales are even more intoxicated at the exotic end. Aston Martin sales have climbed 76 percent so far this year. Ferrari is up 21 percent. At Lamborghini: a 37 percent advance. Bentley rose 28 percent. Rolls Royce chalked a 12 percent gain. Porsche probably feels let down by its measly 8 percent rise. The downside is that all of these sales still amount to peanuts. Ferrari sold only 41 cars in May, Bentley just 14.Bentley sold 189 cars in the United States that month .American brands aren't catching the wave -- with the exception of Chrysler. It has nearly tripled sales, mainly because Chrysler gets the full-year effect of adding the Yspilon compact to its lineup. The car is a rebadged Lancia Ypsilon and only the second car it sells locally, after its 300 sedan. Indeed Chrysler only returned to the market full force last year. Cadillac was up 21 percent through May, and Ford rose 17 percent. But Chevrolet, Jeep and Dodge all saw sales fall. Still, the boom for bling says one thing about consumer mindset in Japan, where the champagne tastes of the 1980s bubble era still sparkle in a population cowed by the nation's lost decade: Spend it when you got it. Review: Nissan GT-R Premium

Overlook, Feel and Performance The Nissan’s legendary super coupe is 545 horsepower, 3,829 pounds,. It goes 196 miles per hour, zero to 60 mph under 3 seconds .It is a car with multimode, fully algorithm-based handling, and dynamics control pumped through a fantastically dialed in all wheel drive system. The vibe of this car is simple, blunt, primitive, deeply mechanical, highly stressed, occasionally argumentative, wide-awake. When you press the GT-R’s Start button, pumps and lubrication circuits come noisily to life, the forged crank twirls and the aluminum pistons of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 pick up the rhythm. The engine built by a single master artisan whose name is etched onto a plaque on the engine shroud falls into an idle like kettledrums at a strip club.

When you slip the stubby gear selector (an electric switch, actually), you can hear and feel satisfying mechanical clunks and shudders coming from the six-speed, dual-clutch transaxle, signaling that the fuse is lit. Gear whine, brake chirr, driveline snatch. The turbos trill like a dentist’s hand piece. When you make a tight parking lot turn, the front wheels scrub hilariously. Actually, most of the time the cabin ambience resembles that of a busy machine shop. The point is, the GT-R’s rawness is deliberate, an artistic choice. If the GT-R’s engineers had wanted to silence all these rude noises, they certainly could have. It was not for want of budget. The GT-R heir to the Skyline 2000 GT, the near-mythic sports coupe sold in Japan since the 1970s—is the global image tent pole for Nissan, and its development budget is likely well padded by the boys in marketing.

As evidence of Nissan seems agnosticism regarding profit, consider the GT-R’s improbable base price of $99,590 for the GT-R Premium. There’s also a GT-R Black edition with murdered-out 20-inch rims and a naked carbon-fiber spoiler At the other end of the GT-R’s carbon-fiber drive shaft is the six-speed, dual-clutch, rear-mounted transaxle with mechanical limited-slip differential and the all-wheel-drive cogs, all nested in the same housing. The GT-R power train is rear-biased, with 100% of engine, torque directed at the rear wheels unless and until the rear slips, at which point the car’s AWD system, after a hurried consultation with the traction and yaw sensors and the stability control, routes corrective torque to the front wheels.

The GT-R offers three mode settings for the power train, suspension and vehicle dynamics (stability/traction intervention), which gives the car a wide range of adjustability; but given the breadth of the car’s performance on the street, in Comfort mode, these switches might as well be Christmas lights in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Just decoration. The GT-R is always an interesting car to drive. Because it first came to global prominence by way of a videogame, “Gran Turismo,” its fan base skews quite a bit younger than other sports cars’. For enthusiasts under 35, this is what fast looks like. Source: Wall Street Journal, May 30

Toyota begins service of selling traffic data collected from 700,000 vehicles

World-leading carmaker Toyota is poised to use real-time traffic information from over 700,000 Toyota vehicles being used in Japan to offer auxiliary “big data” services to local governments and business in the country. The data from these vehicles being driven in roads all across Japan will be helpful for local authorities in times of emergency and disasters, as well as in managing road traffic. Japanese businesses can also leverage on this information for location-aided marketing and other consumer-side campaigns. Toyota Motor Corp. said that the service would be available for 200,000-yen-per-month (around 2,000 US dollars) starting June 3 in Japan. Toyota managing officer Shigeki Tomoyama revealed that similar services overseas might be in the offing, but nothing has been decided yet. The car manufacturer said that data from these Toyota vehicles have started being collected automatically for a while now. This new service will have the huge amount of data processed and made available for clients who are interested. The system will most likely be embedded to the cars’ telematics, as Toyota revealed that it will also be incorporating the use of smart phones and other mobile devices, allowing drivers to share road conditions and observations – including roads that are not passable during natural disasters and accidents. Toyota’s use of big data analytics is by no means the first effort along these lines – U.S. car company Ford said in July 2012 that the data they have gathered from big data analytics allowed the them to have new opportunities, gaining valuable insights into customer behavior, helping the company in managing its business operations, and doing data research on its vehicles. Toyota Motor Corp. Wednesday said it is recalling about 242,000 of its Prius and Lexus hybrid vehicles due to problems with their braking systems. The Lexus sedans are sold in the U.S. and Japan. Of the total, 91,000 were sold in North America. Another 30,000 were sold in Europe. It said there were no accidents or injuries caused by the problem so far, but the company has received dozens of complaints. Toyota suffered a blow to its reputation from a series of massive recalls in 2009 and 2010, including faulty braking, sticky gas pedals and defective floor mats. broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Japanese Car Review Honda Civic

Overview, Look, and Feel of the Honda Civic
If there is any brand that we would suggest other than Toyota, it would be Honda. Like most small cars on the road today, Honda Civic wasn’t all that popular when it was first introduced. Back in the 1970s, most drivers were more interested in big cars with big engines, which was no big deal at the time, since fuel was cheap. By the mid-1970s, fuel prices were spiking, and suddenly small cars like the Honda Civic made perfect sense to the savvy consumer. While the first-generation Civic started out as a subcompact, it has since grown into a compact of many forms, including hatchback, coupe, and sedan. There is a Honda Civic for practically everyone. Like most other cars in its class, Honda Civic offers great fuel economy, but it also manages to be fun-to-drive, something hard to achieve while reducing fuel consumption. Honda Civic suspension tuning leans closer to performance than comfort, which helps to set it apart from its many competitors. Not surprisingly, Honda Civic is second only to Toyota Corolla as one of the most popular vehicles in the world. Honda Civic’s variety makes it appealing to many different drivers, but most especially those looking for reliable and economical transportation. Different body styles range from sedan to coupe to hatchback, and there are enough engine and transmission choices to keep everyone happy as well. Despite its small size, Civic offers a lot of passenger room, enough for four average adults, though taller people might find headroom to be lacking. Cargo space, on the other hand, is less than average for this class, some of that space given up to maximize passenger room.

Honda Civic Performance
Since the beginning, Honda Civic has been powered by small four-cylinder engines. By model year 2000, the original 1.1 i4 had only increased to a maximum of 2.0 but, with improvements including overhead cams and advanced valve design, has nearly tripled power output. At the same time, Honda has managed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. The 2000 Honda Civic Hybrid also marks the first year that Civic was hybridized, with a 1.3 i4 and electric motors. From 2006 onward, Honda Civic has been available with engines up to 2.4 and producing up to 185hp, as well as the slightly underpowered hybrid electric, compressed-natural gas [CNG], diesel and turbo diesel variants.

Honda Civic Competition
If there is one vehicle that is as similar to the Honda Civic without actually being the same, it is the Toyota Corolla. Both the Civic and Corolla are excellent and offer an excellent number of features. Corolla tends to have a more refined interior and more passenger room, while Civic tends to be better known for performance and handling characteristics. Both Toyota and Honda are equally well known for their reliability and longevity. Corolla offers slightly more fuel economy while Civic offers slightly better performance. If you are shopping in this class, then it really, boils down to what you like to drive and what you like to look at.

Pros and Cons
One of the best combinations of performance and fuel economy in one package. Civic isn’t much more powerful than competitors, but makes the most of it with suspension tuning and body design Cons: This is a compact car, but in order to get the performance and efficiency numbers, taller passengers may suffer for headroom and poor trunk space. Nissan recalls 841,000 Micras and Cubes

Nissan said Thursday (23 May) it would recall some 841,000 compact cars worldwide because of a problem with the steering wheel. The recall covers the Micra, known as the March in some markets, and the Cube models produced in Japan and Britain between 2002 and 2006, a company spokesman said. Nissan sold the cars, 763,000 Micras and 78,000 Cubes, in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, but has not received any accident reports related to the glitch, the spokesman said."A bolt in the steering wheel system may not be fastened appropriately, and in the worst case, the cars can't be driven properly," she said."Nissan will fix the problem free of charge in accordance with regulations in each country," she added. The latest recall is another blow to the reputation for safety and reliability that Japan's car manufacturers have had. Last month four companies including Nissan said they were recalling nearly 3.4m vehicles worldwide, in a blow for the country's manufacturers. Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda, all cited the same malfunction of the Japanese-made passenger side airbags.

In January, Toyota said it would recall nearly 1.3m vehicles globally over airbag and windscreen wiper problems. At the end of last year, Toyota said it had agreed to pay about US$1.1bn to settle a class action lawsuit launched by US vehicle owners affected by a series of mass recalls. Despite its travails, Toyota recaptured the title of world's biggest manufacturer from General Motors in 2012, selling 9.75m vehicles.Source: 24th May, Biz community

Japan machinery orders jump, but outlook uncertain

Japanese core machinery orders rose 14.2% in March from the previous month, the government said despite continued caution among Japanese businesses about capital spending activity. The Cabinet Office said core orders, the leading indicator of corporate investment activity, are expected to decline 1.5% in April-June, the fifth straight quarterly fall. It maintained its assessment for the third straight month, saying, "a gradual pickup is being observed." For manufacturers, core orders are expected to edge up 0.8% in April-June, the first increase in seven quarters and "a positive sign for the economy," said Yoko Nakagaki, the head of the Cabinet Office's business statistic bureau. But some economists remain cautious. "A 0.8% upturn can hardly be called a strong recovery" after a fourth straight quarterly decline, said Koya Miyamae, economist with SMBC Nikko Securities. The data are the latest reminder that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's five-month-old campaign to defeat deflation and correct the strong yen has yet to spark business investments--a key economic engine--even as it has fired up the stock market and private consumption. With export volumes yet to show visible signs of improvement despite the sharply weaker yen, "businesses are unable to envisage an export-led recovery yet," Mr. Miyamae said. The 14.2% jump in March is the largest month-on-month gain in the current data series that dates back to April 2005. The figure was lifted by large lot orders three in total--such as a railway-related investment and an information-system purchase at a financial institution.

The gain was much larger than a 2.5% increase expected by economists in a survey by Nikkei and Dow Jones Newswires. Core orders for March totaled 793.1 billion yen ($7.8 billion), the largest total since October 2008, just before the U.S. financial crisis slammed the global economy. For January-March, core orders were unchanged. These exclude orders from electric power companies and those for ships, as their large size and sharp swings make it difficult to identify underlying trends. The figure is adjusted for seasonal factors to make a month-on-month comparison possible. From the year-ago month, core orders rose 2.4% in March on an unadjusted basis. Japanese Car Review The Toyota Corolla

Overview, Look, and Feel of the Toyota Corolla
Since 1997, the Toyota Corolla has been the world’s best-selling vehicle, and for good reason. First appearing on the scene in the mid-1960s, the Corolla was ideal for the crowded streets of Japanese cities. The rest of the world wasn’t really interested in such a small vehicle, still more interested in gaz-guzzling cars like the Australian Ford Falcon, or the American Chevy Nova. These were beautiful vehicles, but they sure did suck up the fuel, which was no big deal because fuel was cheap. In the early 1970s everything changed and fuel prices shot up. Suddenly small fuel-efficient vehicles totally made sense. From 1992 to 1997 the Volkswagen Beetle reigned supreme as world’s best-selling vehicle. After 1997, Toyota Corolla took the top spot and has kept it ever since. The Toyota Corolla is built for fuel efficiency, but it isn’t just another cheap ride. Toyota builds this vehicle for a 400,000km lifespan, which isn’t something that many automakers can achieve in a vehicle as well-sold. The Corolla’s basic form is a small sedan, but variations include somewhat larger wagons and quite a bit sportier coupes. The design is simple, typically has room to fit four passengers comfortably with modest trunk space. Seating is comfortable and controls are simple. Engine and transmission are adequate with a focus on efficiency and reliability, and even sport models are extremely reliable despite their higher power output.

Pros
If there’s one thing to say about the Toyota Corolla, above all else, is that it is reliable and has great fuel economy. In an age of increasing fuel prices and concerns over emissions, the Toyota Corolla is an excellent choice.

Cons
Comparing the Toyota Corolla, feature by feature, with some the competition, some may balk at the higher price. Still, reliability is hard to price.

Toyota Corolla Engine Specs and Performance
Depending on the year and location, Toyota Corolla models these days are typically powered by a four cylinder engine ranging from 1.3? to 2.4?. These run on gasoline or diesel fuel and generating 53kW to 162kW in the case of some turbocharged models. An excellent balance of power and economy, the turbocharged models offer better performance and better fuel economy, which is hard to achieve given traditional methods of these two often-opposed goals. Transmission options include manual transmissions in five and six speeds, and automatic transmissions in three and four speeds. A new constant-velocity transmission [CVT] is now available that constantly varies gear ratios for optimal performance and efficiency. With the addition of Toyota’s computer controls and a pair of shift paddles on the steering wheel, the CVT can even mimic the shift behavior of a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Corolla Competition
Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and Honda Civic are all fairly close in the running because they are such similar cars. As a matter of fact, Ford Focus is within a hair’s breadth of Toyota Corolla in global sales numbers. Surprisingly, Honda Civic doesn’t seem to be that high in the numbers. Still the choices are very similar. Focus offers a little more trunk space at the cost of rear seat space, but doesn’t have the same reliability as Corolla. Civic handles better than Corolla and is probably just as reliable. Corolla is typically the most expensive of the bunch, which turns some buyers off, but in the end, you have to decide what you’re willing to pay for, reliability, space, or performance. It’s hard to get all three in one package. Source: auto-era.net, May 15

Return of the Big, Bad Japan Export Machine

April trade data released Wednesday showed the U.S. has retaken the crown as Japan’s top export market from China for the fifth month in the last 12. The total value of exports is nearly at pre-Lehman Shock levels, mostly thanks to a 21.0% increase in car exports on year. In recent months, Japanese auto exports have again started to become a source of tension between the two nations. That’s because the yen has weakened 20% against the dollar in the past six months, making Japanese products like cars cheaper and potentially more competitive against their American counterparts. Japan was already shipping 75 cars to the U.S. for every one car that arrived from across the ocean in 2012.“The depth of Japanese currency manipulation has reached a new low,” said Matt Blunt, president of the auto lobby group the American Automotive Policy Council, when the yen fell to ¥100 against the dollar earlier this month. He added that a falling yen “results in fewer American exports and jobs.”The yen falling from ¥90 to ¥100 against the dollar would increase Japanese auto exports to the U.S. by 15.1%, according to a Center for Automotive Research study supported by Ford Motor Co. that was published last year. That currency move, plus the cutting of a 2.5% tariff on Japanese cars, would cause the loss of 91,515 jobs in the U.S. while boosting Japanese exports by 362,767 units.

The cutting of the tariff was effectively shelved when the U.S. and Japan agreed in April to discuss it over the long-term. Yet analysts point out that currency moves are becoming less of an issue as Japan’s big automakers increasingly build where they sell Toyota Motor Co. says 70.4% of the 2.08 million vehicles sold in North America in 2012 were also made there, versus just 54.9% of 2.21 million vehicles in 2008 Nissan Motor Co. is aiming to have 85% of its vehicles sold in the U.S. to be built in North America by 2015, versus 69% now. Even so, Japanese automakers still export a hefty chunk of their domestic production abroad. And the drastic nature of the yen’s shift against the dollar from ¥78 to over ¥100 means that the Japanese auto makers will inevitably make life more difficult for its North American competitors. A Morgan Stanley research report last month estimates “the move from ¥78 to ¥100 conservatively represents $2,000/unit benefit, or $12 billion in funds the Japanese can play with.”And, of course, Japanese exports are only as strong as the market for which they’re bound, economists say.“The possibility of economic expansion is premised on a rise in exports as overseas economic growth firms up,” said Takeshi Minami, economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. “Looking overseas, the rate of growth is still only gradual.” Source: Wall Street Journal, May 22

SE V6 models get 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition/entry, a navigation system, voice recognition and the Entune smartphone and Web integration system. The luxurious XLE reverts to the LE's softer suspension settings and adds heated exterior mirrors, fog lamps, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat a. XLE V6 models add a rearview camera, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, a power front passenger seat and heated front seats. Some of the extra features found on the higher trims can be added as options to the lower trim levels, though availability can vary depending on which region of the country you live in. A premium 10-speaker JBL audio system is optional for the SE and XLE. On the XLE V6, Toyota also offers a hard-drive-based navigation system with a larger central display.

Power trains and Performance

Every 2013 Toyota Camry features front-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic transmission and two engine choices. Base Camrys are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. With EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg city/35 highway and 28 combined, the four-cylinder Camry is among the class leaders. Optional is a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, which helps the Camry V6 reach 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, average for upgrade engines in this class. Fuel economy is an impressive 21/31/25.

Safety

The 2013 Toyota Camry comes with a battery of standard safety features, including antilock brakes, stability control, front- and rear-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and knee airbags for both driver and passenger. A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is also available.

Interior Design and Special Features

The interior of the 2013 Camry feels roomy and its thin front pillars provide good outward visibility. What the cabin design lacks in cohesiveness, it makes up for with generally good materials quality, especially the handsome stitching on the dash and door panels of upper trims. Accord for the most comfortable backseat in the class. At 15.4 cubic feet, the Camry's trunk capacity is about average, although the 60/40-split rear seat folds down to yield more cargo space when necessary.

Driving Impressions

Both four-cylinder and V6 engines generate ample power for their sizes, and that power is delivered in a smooth, quiet fashion. Gear changes are likewise unobtrusive, and for a car that earns such high fuel economy numbers, the transmission surprises with quick downshifts when additional power is needed. On the highway, the 2013 Toyota Camry is comfortable and an excellent long-distance companion. The electric-assisted steering feels good in the V6 and SE versions. But non-SE four-cylinder versions are vague and somewhat lifeless in comparison. Most drivers will probably be fine with the way the Camry drives, but we still recommend the SE. It's not exactly sporty, but does feel more in line with the handling and responsiveness of its best rivals. Source: www.edmunds.com,

Toyota profits double as yen continues slide

Sales in the recovering US market have helped boost Toyota's fortunes. Toyota's profit more than doubled in the three months to March as a weakening yen and improved sales boosted the carmaker's comeback.Net income rose to 313.9bn yen ($3.2bn; £2bn) up from 121bn yen for the same period the previous year. Toyota also forecast a profit of 1.37tn yen for the next financial year, up from 962bn yen this year. Japan has recently taken monetary steps to weaken the yen, a move that benefits exporters such as Toyota. Japanese carmakers including Toyota have seen a recovery after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake disaster disrupted supply chains and hurt production. Sales have recovered in the US and in key Asian markets. Toyota also cited the weakening yen as a factor in the positive figures. The Japanese currency has lost about one-fifth of its value against the US dollar since November. A weak yen helps boost Japanese firms' competitiveness overseas and boosts the value of their foreign income when it is repatriated back home. Source: Automotive News, May 15, 2013.

Dozens of car, truck and motorcycle makers will be in attendance at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year, organizers said Monday, but the Big Three US automakers will be skipping it again. The 43rd edition of the event, which is held every two years in Tokyo, is scheduled for Nov 22 to Dec 1. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler will not be attending for the third-straight time, said Atsushi Fujimaki, a spokesman for the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The trio did not attend the show’s 2009 and 2011 editions.“Honestly, we don’t know why,” he said. “As a matter of course, we wanted them to take part and we asked them to do so as we have in the past.”Among the Japanese and foreign brands taking part are Toyota, Honda and Suzuki, Germany’s BMW, France’s Renault and Sweden’s Volvo. Two years ago, the show was held months after Japan’s quake-tsunami disaster, which crippled production for Japanese automakers and dented their financial results. Japanese Car Makers Lose Their Midsize Edge

For Charlee Smith, buying an affordable family sedan used to be a no-brainer. He mainly bought vehicles from Nissan Motor Co., believing Japanese autos cars stood out for their quality, reliability and resale value. But when looking for a new vehicle a few months ago, the 63-year-old Templeton, Calif., sales manager broadened his search, checking out models from Volkswagen AG, Hyundai Motor Co. and the Detroit auto makers. He wound up buying a Fusion Hybrid, from Ford Motor Co his first domestic-brand car in years. Most people buy a car with the goal of getting as much out of it as possible before trading it in. MarketWatch's Jim Jelter discusses five cars Americans are most likely to trade in sooner than planned.. A few years ago, Toyota Motor Corp.’s Camry and Honda Motor Co.'s 7 Accord were top sellers by a wide margin. Their share fell to 28% in the first quarter, from 37% of the U.S. midsize sedan market in 2008, according to Edmunds. A weaker yen may give other Japanese makers room to lower prices as well. Now, it is a wide-open market. Ford and GM have turned their midsize sedans into real challengers and closed the quality gap with Japan; meanwhile, the Japanese were knocked off stride by recall troubles that hurt Toyota in 2010 and production disruptions in Japan that resulted from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The rising challengers include Ford's Fusion, with a 11.9% share of U.S. sales through April, up from 6.8% for all of 2008, Kia Motors Corp .'s Optima at 6%, up 3.9 percentage points, and Volkswagen AG's Passat at 3.9%, up 2.5 percentage points, according to auto website Edmunds.com.

Both the Camry and Accord were recently redesigned, too. But they are no longer head and shoulders above the pack. "People buy them because they're reliable but they've started to fall into the appliance category," said Mr. Smith, the Fusion buyer. Last month, sales of the sedan jumped 28% over the year-earlier month. Further intensifying the competition is the midsize-car market is no longer growing as fast as it did last year, putting more pressure on automakers to steal buyers from rival brands to boost sales. "The Camry is under intense pressure," said Tom Libby, an auto analyst for research firm, R.L. Polk. "It is not just one model anymore. For the buyer who wants a midsize family car, it is a perfect time because of the competition." The new competition has forced the Japanese to do something unexpected: Raise their discounts and other sales incentives. Toyota recently began offering zero-percent financing on its 2013 Camry, hoping to spur sales after a sluggish start to the year. While still the market's top-seller, Camry sales were down 7% through April this year. The average net price on a Camry last month was about $21,336, down about $2,700 from March 2012, according to Edmunds.com. The Accord, while still the second-best selling car in the U.S., is falling short of Honda's internal goals, said John Mendel, the company's vice president for sales. In April, Honda's sales fell 5% from the same month a year ago. Honda now has among the lowest incentives in the market for its midsize sedan.GM, Ford, and others are nudging up incentives. Japanese Car Review The Honda Fit

Overview, Look, and Feel of the Honda Fit The Honda fit is the smallest vehicle in the Honda line up. A subcompact four-door hatchback first appeared on the scene just six years ago. Honda used a more compact rear suspension setup and put the fuel tank under the passenger seat in order to maximize interior space without making the vehicle bigger. To get even more cargo space the rear seats fold flat, which something is not found in some similar models.

Engine Specs and Performance
The Honda Fit comes equipped with a 1.5 i-DSI i4 engine mated to a five-speed either manual or automatic transmission. The engine is rated at just 117hp, which still manages to feel sufficiently fun, given the attention that Honda put to the steering and suspension, making the most use of the power available. The manual transmission is standard but the automatic transmission trumps the manual with the addition of paddle shifters (at least on the Sport model) to mimic driving a manual. The automatic also manages to squeeze out more miles per gallon than the manual, rated at 35mpg hwy over the manual’s 33mpg hwy.

Honda Fit Competition
Where the Honda Fit really shines is its combination of style, interior room, and fuel economy, which would seem to be at odds when discussing an inexpensive subcompact. Honda pulls it off nicely in this package. The interior is very well put together and includes, even on the base model, comfort and convenience items like air conditioning, tilt and telescope steering wheel, four-speaker audio system with CD player and iPod/USB support. The sport model can even be fit with satellite navigation, alloy wheels, and some sporty trimwork both inside and out. The ride is surprisingly comfortable for such a small vehicle. Road noise is higher than some larger sedans, but not nearly as noisy as most other subcompacts. Engine noise on the highway is a little more than is comfortable for a long drive. Why & how to check Manufacturing year of the used car to be imported from Japan?

Every country was having their own regulations while importing any type of used vehicles from Japan. Due to increase in the volume of the import of these Japanese used cars, almost country’s like Kenya, Russia, Mauritius, Jamaica, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Australia, United Kingdom, Caribbean Countries, Philippine’s government strictly asks to follow some guidelines to avoid importing useless or vehicles, which are harmful to the environment of their country. One of the most common restrictions from the government of any country was related to manufacturing year of the vehicle importing to their country. Actually in Japan you can know the details of first registration easily but the manufacturing year is not written on the export deregistration certificate or on Car Registration Certificate and it is necessary to mention the year of manufacturing while importing any used car to some of the countries. Why these importing countries do not accept this first registration?

It is because the first registration means the month and the year of the first ownership of the vehicle in Japan, which does not provide any information about when it was actually manufactured. This the main problem which an importer face while buying any used car from Japan as to match his country’s importing regulations. Like if we take an example of Kenya country regulation related to year manufacturing restriction no vehicle can be older than 8 years from the first Registration. The difference between the date of registration and the date of manufacture shall be not more than one year. Now a day to sort these problems and to ensure the buyers about the manufacturing year of the car, lots of Japanese dealers are providing some online solutions to check and verify the manufacturing years & months of the used car they are going to buy. These information can be available with no charges; importers or buyers just have to enter the Chassis number along with you have to select the maker’s name, now click the submit button and you will have your information immediately available online itself. Review of 2013 Toyota RAV4

Nearly everyone agrees that the black cladding around the body sides and front and rear fascias does just enough to butch up the delicate-nosed CUV without going off the deep-end into gritty SUV territory. The body sits primed on the 17-inch alloy wheels, too, with just enough space between the tire and the wheel well to offer a vague notion of ground clearance, yet with ride height low enough to make the RAV4 seem planted. (Be honest, CUV Driver – you only go off-road by accident.) Still, park the RAV4 next to any Sportage, CX-5 or even the smaller Subaru XV Crosstrek, and it starts to look a little dull.(well, except for the Range Rover Evoque). Older versions of the Toyota are all over the place, and yet not a head was turned all week while we drove some 200+ miles. Toyota RAV 4 drive train is all wheel drive. It has 5 seats. The engine is 2.5 LI4. Power is 176 HP / 172 LB-FT. 6-Speed Automatic transmissions

With around 5,000 miles on the odometer the RAV4 XLE was still an infant in terms of the 200k+ mile Toyota life expectancy. The vehicle's 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine was well matched to the task, revving the engine over 4,000 rpm or so resulted in a kind of thrashy exhaust note. What's more, wind and tire noise on the freeway were, at best, equal to what CUVs like the CX-5 and Crosstrek deliver. Throttle tip-in was well managed in this mode, too, with good starts resulting from an extra couple degrees of boot. Eco mode does kill a lot of that buzz – the drivetrain feels oddly rubbery and sluggish thusly configured – but it also helped return fuel economy close to the EPA estimates. On the highway, even without Eco mode, we scooted along at or above the expected 29 miles per gallon (for the all-wheel-drive RAV4). The city rating was a bit harder to match; our heavy-footed driving style got us closer to 19 or 20 mpg most of the time. But with the magically dull Eco button pushed, 22 and 23 mpg was no problem. You won't like it, but it's good for you.The ride and handling suite of the RAV4 is middle of the road, save for the grippier-than-expected cornering of the all-wheel-drive version. Used Automobile Market To Witness Rise in South America and Caribbean Region

South American and the Caribbean have been great markets for many decades. They have been importing vehicles new and use from Japan, US and Europe. Japanese vehicles have enjoyed being the first choice of people here. Japan had been the leading exporters of automobiles in the region. Chile and Peru being the leading importers of used vehicles from Japan for more than a decade. All important countries in the region like Chile, Peru, Suriname, Guyana, Jamaica, Dominician Republic, Bahamas, Paraguya and Trinidad and Tobago together imported more than 200,000 vehicles in 2008. The import has shown little low in 2009-2011 due to strong Japanese yen but is likely to revive in future due to favorable market conditions. Japan used vehicles exports increased to Jamaica (11,271 units), Trinidad and Tobago (10,939 units) and Bolivia (2,566 units) 100 % in year 2012 compare to year 2011 and where as export to Suriname increased to 40 % (12,315 units). It is expected that with the economic growth in Latin America and increase in buying capacity would push vehicle demands upwards considerably. The region has a population of 400 million people and increasing GDP per capita from USD 3,160 per year in 1980 to USD7,786 per year in 2009 and GDP per capita in expected to reach USD 10,770 per year in 2015. Income from tourism is key to the economy of several Latin American countries. Thus, every governments focus is to improve tourism related facilities to meet the needs of visiting tourists. Primary of these needs is comfortable, safe means of transport.

In recent years Mexico receives the largest number of international tourists with 22.3 million visitors, followed by Argentina with 5.2 million Brazil with 5.1million : Columbia with 4.35 million. Puerto Rico with 3.6 million, Chille with 2.7 million. Dominican Republica with 4.1 million and Panama with 2.06 million. Advance buses, cars, SUV’s, pickup are needed to meet the increasing inflow of tourists in the country. In Japan, new Prime Minister’s efforts to revive the economy by pushing down value of yen and encourage exporters. Once again used vehicles export business catching up. Also availability of most resent models with eco friendly technology in auction houses as used cars and supportive attitude of used car exporters in Japan will increase in demand for used vehicles that meet the standards of most countries in south America and Caribbean market. Latin America’s automobile sector has seen expansion in 2010 due to strong domestic demand. Demand will continue to grow over the next few years. Also the regions vehicle fleet is still small, even compared to countries with similar levels of development. Rapid increase in the relatively young middle class will provide and additional impulse to automobile demand. Source: JapaneseCarTrade.com, April-June 2013

Best Used Cars in the Suv Segment

If you are buying vehicles and you have been wondering on which best used cars to buy, a look at the sales data can help you in buying the vehicles. More importantly when it comes to automotive, people do not buy cars for the reason that they are popular; people buy cars because the models fit their needs and lifestyle. This is true especially for those who are interested in buying sport utility vehicles or SUVs. SUV is short form for Sport Utility Vehicle. At the beginning, SUV was a vehicle that combined the towing capacity of a full-size truck with the passenger and storage capacity of a minivan. However, as consumer demands have changed, so has the vehicle. Many manufacturers now focus on fuel-efficiency and driving and riding comfort, rather than towing capacity.

SUVs cater to a part of the market who really knows what they want. SUVs are more expensive than sedans and because of their large engines and more fuel consumption. SUVs may look sporty and luxurious but owing one is definitely serious business. Nevertheless, if you’re one of those serious SUV buyers and are looking for the best model to buy, the sales data for 2012 SUV sales is worth looking at. Japanese models are very well represented in the 2012 worldwide models ranking, starting with the #1 spot held by the Toyota Corolla with 1,097,132 sales. Then we find the Toyota Camry at #4 and 797,466 units, the Nissan Tiida/Sunny at #8 with 774,846 sales, Toyota Yaris/Vios at #12 and 708,619 units and the Honda Civic at #14 with 656,164 sales. The Japanese SUV was recently awarded the bestselling SUV in the world in 2012. In 2012, it sold 635,256 units, making it the number one SUV in the whole world. This achievement went along with the sale increase recorded by the Honda CR-V last year, selling 635,256 units in total. The Honda CR-V beats other SUV models sold on various parts of the globe. Honda CR-V is one of the best used cars to buy because of its overall good performance, reliability, safety, and value for money. For your information, Honda started introducing the CR-V to the automotive public in the world in 1995 and has sold the model in more than 160 countries in the world since.

Another Japanese brand vehicle is the Toyota RAV4, which comes in at appropriately number four, with 428,514 units sold. The Nissan Qashqai/Dualis is the third and last Japanese model in the top ten, with a total sale of 298,066 units. Not quite making it to the top ten but still a worthy SUV is the Nissan Juke at number eleven and 232,128 in sales. At its heels is the Toyota Highlander (or Kluger as it is known in Japan) with 230,547 units sold. The other Japanese models that may be regarded as the best used cars to buy in the SUV segment are the Nissan Rogue (160,265 sold), Mazda CX-5 (154,877 sold), Toyota Land Cruiser Series (150,701 sold), Toyota Fortuner/Hilux SW4 (149,756 sold), Toyota Prado (143,430 sold), Suzuki SX4 (126,990 sold), Subaru Forester (124,605 sold), Honda Pilot (124,295 sold), Nissan X-Trail (114,446 sold), Mitsubishi Outlander Sport/ASX (111,508 sold), Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero (107,696 sold), Mitsubishi Outlander (77,494 sold), and the Toyota Rush/Daihatsu Terios (76,788sold).Those are the Japanese models that made it to the bestselling SUV list for 2012. So if you are SUV enthusiastic and you are serious buyer this should give you an idea about the most trusted models in the SUV segment, as reliability is a prime factor why people buy SUVs in the first place. Note: Please check our stock (www.tqmjapan.com) (www.tqmbazaar.com) to find the above mentioned used vehicles of different make, model and type.

2013 Toyota 4Runner Review

This midsize SUV is almost in a class by itself, being one of the last such vehicles to use traditional, truck-type body-on-frame construction. The overwhelming majority of competitors in this segment are unibody crossovers. Its truck-type design and available heavy-duty off-road hardware allows the 4Runner to traverse areas that a crossover dare not approach. This Toyota can seat up to 7 passengers, too. While it might be cross-shopped against similarly sized crossovers, such as the Honda Pilot, the 4Runner's off-road credentials put it more in-line with SUVs such as the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and Nissan Xterra.4Runner borrows its basic design from the smaller, but similar purpose Toyota FJ Cruiser and is made in Japan.

What’s New

Since its model-year 2010 redesign, Toyota has not done much to the 4Runner, and 2013 is no exception. The top-line Limited trim level gains a standard navigation system and newly optional power running boards.

Model Lineup Features and Options
Toyota offers the 4Runner in base SR5, off-road-themed Trail, and luxury-oriented Limited trim levels. The SR5 includes most amenities buyers would expect from a midsize SUV. One feature of note is that the rearmost window can be raised and lowered independently of the liftgate. The Trail adds a power driver seat, rearview camera, and a sliding rear cargo shelf that can support up to 440 pounds. Among its heavy-duty hardware items are a locking rear differential and Toyota's Crawl Control, which helps regulate vehicle speed when off-roading. The top-line Limited builds on the SR5 model. It includes a sport suspension, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry/engine start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a navigation system with Toyota's Entune infotainment system. All 4Runners have standard 5-passenger seating. A 3rd-row split-bench seat that increases total capacity to 7 is optional on the SR5 and Limited. Navigation with Entune is optional on the SR5 and Trail. Leather and heated front seats are optional on the SR5.The Trail's optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) can automatically disconnect the suspension stabilizer bars for greater wheel articulation in severe off-road conditions.

Engines, Transmissions, and Drive Wheels
For 2013, 4Runner soliders on with its 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The SR5 and Limited are available with rear-wheel drive. Toyota offers two 4-wheel-drive systems. The SR5 and Trail have a part-time setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement. The Limited's is full-time, which can. Both include low-range gearing for off-road use. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
Rear-drive models are EPA-rated at 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway. Four-wheel-drive models are rated at 17/21. The 4Runner uses regular-grade gas.

Airbag recall shows risk of global supply chains

A massive vehicle recall by four Japanese automakers because of faulty airbags underscores the perils of huge global supply chains as companies increasingly rely on a handful of suppliers for common or similar parts. Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda are recalling about 3.4 million vehicles worldwide because of airbags supplied by Takata Corp. that are at risk of catching fire or injuring passengers. Toyota is recalling about 1.73 million vehicles produced between November 2000 and March 2004, including 580,000 vehicles in North America and 490,000 vehicles in Europe. Honda is recalling about 1.14 million vehicles, while Nissan said it may call back 480,000 vehicles. Mazda said it is recalling 45,463 units.

It is the largest recall for airbags made by Takata, the world's second-largest supplier of airbags and seat belts, Reuters reported. Increasingly, groups of carmakers rely on single-source global suppliers for key components. And there are hazards."It's a huge problem for the industry," said George Magliano, senior auto analyst with IHS Automotive. "The issue today is we can't change the way we do business, because otherwise we just can't operate profitably."Still, he said, "We can't allow failure in the supply chain."Some airbags at the front passenger seat may not inflate correctly because of a problem with the propellant used in the airbag inflator, Toyota spokesman Ryo Sakai said. Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada said that five incidents of malfunctions have been reported, though there were no accidents or injuries. In the United States, vehicles involved include certain Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra, and Lexus SC 430 models made from 2001-03, according to a statement from Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. in California. General Motors said Takata is a supplier, but that the problem affected only about 55,000 2003 Pontiac Vibes assembled at the Fremont, Calif., plant GM previously ran in a joint venture with Toyota. Those vehicles were included in Toyota's total recall number, a GM spokesman said. Some non-Japanese automakers were also supplied with the faulty airbags, a Takata spokesman in Japan said. He declined to name those automakers.BMW has an undetermined number of vehicles affected by the recall, a U.S. spokesman for Takata said. Officials with Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Renault and Volkswagen said they were unaffected because they did not use the airbags covered by the recall. The Takata U.S. spokesman said no other customers were affected. Source: Automotive News , April 15, 2013

At Shanghai show, Japanese automakers woo lost sales

Japanese automakers promised special Chinese designs and green technology in addition to the usual flashy fanfare at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show, trying to woo back sales that crumpled during a territorial dispute over East China Sea islands late last year. China is the world’s biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold and crucial to the growth plans of global automakers. Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota lost market share to U.S., South Korean and German rivals as their sales plummeted and now, even as tensions between Japan and China abate, they continue to languish. The dispute over control of the Japanese-administered islands, called Diayo in China and Senkaku in Japan, set off riots in China and a boycott of Japanese cars. Sales of cars from Japanese manufacturers plunged at one point to half of what they were the previous year. Latest figures show sales of Japanese brands are still declining while other automakers push deeper into a market that analysts predict will have annual sales of 32 million vehicles by 2020 — the equivalent of the United States and Europe combined. Japanese automakers suffered a 17.8% sales decline in March overall, while total vehicle sales in China surged 13.3%, according to Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book. “Until the territorial dispute is resolved, it appears as though Japanese automakers will continue to face challenges in the still growing Chinese market,” he said. Honda Motor Co President Takanobu Ito said the automaker had gone through anti-Japanese sentiment in the U.S. during “Japan-bashing” in the late 1980s, but Honda had earned its place in the U.S. by bringing Americans on board as developers and assembly line workers. Nissan Motor Co, whose March sales were down nearly 17% from last year, has been wooing buyers back with a warranty on cars that get smashed by rioters. Winning in the Chinese market is likely to depend on other factors as well, such as the strength of dealerships, the appeal of model lineups and the management of recalls, analysts say. The Japanese must overcome their current sales difficulties and also deal with tough competition from European and U.S. rivals.

Toyota Motor Corp, whose March sales in China were down 12% from a year earlier, is hoping to win over China with its gas-electric hybrids, a technology it pioneered with the Prius. China is increasingly concerned about energy efficiency and pollution, and Toyota is hopeful that hybrids will catch on with Chinese buyers. Rapid growth in car sales has left Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities choked on traffic and smog. By the end of 2015, or early 2016, Toyota is planning to start selling two hybrid models in China, developed by a special team for the Chinese market, in which the core part of the hybrid system will be totally made in China. Tadashi Yamashina, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (China) Co President, acknowledged the company was taking a risk with pushing hybrids in China where such vehicles are currently a tiny proportion of sales. But he believes the technology is well suited for the country as long as it is affordable. Toyota did not give sales prices or production numbers for the planned models.“The era of hybrids is almost certain to come. It has taken off in the rest of the world,” he said. “Besides, it will be good for China.” Source: Japantoday.com, April 22

Toyota launches redesigned Crown flagship in Japan

The 58-year-old Toyota Crown line has entered its 14th generation with the unveil of the 2013 Crown Athlete and Crown Royal sedans for the Japanese market, both of which can be had with hybrid power. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter V6 with 200 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid uses the 2.5-liter four-cylinder from the Camry mated to an electric motor for 176 hp and 163 lb-ft. The Athlete gets a third choice, a 3.5-liter V6 with 311 hp and 278 lb-ft. There are two transmissions in the mix, the base engine in either sedan shifting through a six-speed automatic, while the more potent V6 in the Crown Athlete gets an eight-speed auto. Depending on which model is chosen, either the rear or all four wheels will be driven. Outside, the sedan less than an inch longer than our Lexus ES gets a stiffer body thanks to more spot welding and a new can't-miss-it grille reminiscent of a crown. On the Royal model, the opening is filled with horizontal bars, while the Athlete trim gets mesh filler. Inside is the Toyota Multi-Touch Operation unit that allows touch screen control of various functions, new wood grain patterns and gold stitching. Driving and safety tech includes an Adaptive High Beam System, Panoramic View Monitor, Pre-collision System and Intelligent Clearance Sonar. Prices for the Crown Royal series start at 3,530,000 yen ($40,983 US) and go up to 5,360,000 ($62,225 US) for the hybrid Royal Saloon G. The Crown Athlete starts at 3,570,000 ($41,438 US) and goes up to 5,430,000 ($63,028 US) for the hybrid Athlete G. Toyota hopes to shift a not-insubstantial 4,000 Crowns per month in its home market. As Obama's CO2 regulations get tough, automakers especially Japanese have already earned a big cushion

As automakers ratchet down the fuel consumption of their cars to meet tougher federal standards, the top Japanese automakers already have an enormous head start from credits they earned since the 2009 model year. Because they outperformed old fuel economy standards before new requirements were phased in, Toyota, Honda and Nissan have a huge cushion that will help them meet increasingly tight standards. Last month the EPA quietly posted a report that shows these three companies have so many credits that their current fleets, unchanged, could meet EPA requirements through the 2016 model year, said David Friedman, a senior engineer at the Union of Concerned Scientists. The companies are highly unlikely to do that, Friedman said, because they need to meet much stricter standards from 2017 to 2025 and because fuel economy has become a crucial selling point. But these companies still have enough credits "that they could slow down near-term investments in clean cars," he said. When the new standards started to phase in for the 2012 model year, Toyota held 86 million EPA credits. Each credit represents one more metric ton of carbon dioxide that its vehicles could emit over their lifetimes than the Obama administration's new program nominally allows. The credits give Toyota more options for meeting new EPA limits on tailpipe emissions, which will get 3 to 5 percent stricter each year in tandem with new corporate average fuel economy standards that ramp up to a nominal 54.5 mpg in the 2025 model year. Toyota, the dominant player in hybrids, and other automakers have kept mum on plans for these credits, which can be used until the 2021 model year, except for the credits from 2009, which last only five years. Tom Stricker, vice president of technical and regulatory affairs at Toyota Motor North America, acknowledged that the credits are a "valuable tool for future compliance."Automakers may sell their excess credits to competitors that fall short. And while there are some limitations on using credits to build gas-guzzlers, automakers with credits would have more leeway to build more powerful vehicles with lower mpg than competitors that are feeling the crunch of CAFE."It will give a company like Toyota an opportunity to promote performance a little more aggressively than we will be able to," said an executive who plans CAFE compliance for another major automaker. "They will have the ability to not ratchet down the performance of their mainstream products as much. Do we wish we had more? Yes. Do we wish they had less? Sure."Source : Automotive news

Ferrari sees Japan as growth market as China, Europe sales slump

Japan is becoming Ferrari's next growth market. Registrations of Fiat SpA (F)'s ultra-luxury brand surged 40 percent to 144 vehicles in Japan last quarter, according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association .That's more than twice the growth in the larger U.S. market, while demand is slumping in China, at home and across Europe. For the fiscal year ended March, Ferrari registrations in Japan increased 46 percent to a 12-year high of 558, according to the import group. The company's not alone in seeing a boom as Volkswagen AG (VOW)'s Lamborghini sold 199 vehicles, the most in at least 14 years, and sales of imported cars worth more than 10 million yen ($105,000) have risen two straight years, based on the registration data. Japan's mini-car sales jump to record high

Sales in Japan of 660 cc passenger mini-cars jumped to a record high in the last financial year, signaling structural change in a market where family size is shrinking and buyers are shifting to smaller cars. Buyers and owners pay less tax for mini-vehicles, a category known as "kei" in Japan for cars that follow certain size and other criteria, than for bigger vehicles. Automakers sold a record 1.57 million passenger mini-cars in the year ended on March 31, up 23 percent from the previous year, industry data showed. Combined sales of mini-trucks, mini-vans and passenger mini-cars were 1.97 million vehicles, up 16.8 percent from a year ago and the second highest on record. That accounted for nearly 40 percent of the 5.21 million automobiles sold in the country in the year. Non-mini sales also rose, by 5.7 percent year-on-year helped by green car subsidies, but the share of minis in total sales extended a growth trend over the past two decades. Source: Economic Times

Three-wheeled/four/wheeled mini-sized motor vehicles and small-motor cycle are obligated to undergo inspection. Motor vehicles are inspected regularly to confirm their structure and Equipment with safety regulations. This increases vehicles safety and prevents pollutions while enabling smoother road traffics and saving more energy. The motor vehicle inspection is conducted to determine the conformity of motor vehicles with regard to the Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles. Motor vehicle is allowed to be operated on the road unless it has passed the motor vehicle inspection and it has obtained a valid motor vehicle inspection certificate. When a motor vehicle is to be operated for the first time Initial Inspection is to be performed. Used cars without the number plate shall also be subject to this inspection. Less tax
Registration and customs, taxes are based on the declared value of the car. Those importing new cars would have to pay a higher tax because they are paying the percentage of the new-car value. If you are importing a used unit from one of TQM International you will only need to declare the transaction price you paid for the car, which would surely be less than a new one, and which means you’ll be paying less tax.

Negotiable prices
Used vehicle market is the place where you can negotiate, there’s no such thing as a fixed price. The prices differ depending on whether you will also be including freight cost and insurance. TQM is doing its best to please its potential customers. You can negotiate and buy the vehicle of your choice.

Don’t forget 4 things before buying used vehicles

If you have already make up your mind in buying used cars from Japan. Visit our website www.tqmjapan.com and choose the vehicle of you like. As you go on buying vehicles from TQM, you need to keep these 4 things in mind to make your import easy, safe, and hassle-free.

Import regulations. Different countries have different restrictions about importing new and used cars, trucks, buses, and even auto parts, so check your national import laws and regulations. These regulations would state who can import (usually natural-born citizens and some migrants), what can be imported, details on the import application process, and the requirements needed for importation.

RHD of LHD?
RHD means Right hand drive and LHD refers to left hand drive. You must know which driving models your country uses. Though many countries allow the use of both kinds of vehicles it would be better to buy a car that would be easier to handle considering your country’s traffic flow. Technically, the steering wheel placement (which tells whether the car is LHD or RHD) is opposite to the traffic flow: left-hand traffic countries use RHD vehicles; right-hand traffic countries use LHD.

FOB, CIF and C&F ?
You should know about FOB,CIF and C & F . You would encounter these terminologies when buying cars from Japan. FOB of Free on Board is the most basic price, which includes a sold cars transport from dealers stock yard up to the port where it is to be shipped. It does not include the cost of transportation and marine insurance yet. If you want to include these expenses in the dealers price calculation as for CIF amount or Cost Insurance and Freight. C & F means costs and freight, which is CIF but it does not include the marine insurance.

Secure payment
For the secure payment, you need to check the exporters background. You can even see the testimonials and find out about the exporters whether it is trustworthy or not. TQM International provides you secure payment service once you confirm your vehicles. You should pay at least 50 percent in advance within 3 working days and you will receive your car. After the confirmation of vehicle has been made, we will proceed for the shipment. Rest 50% should be cleared within 3 working days after ship left from Japan. TQM will send shipping document and you need to submit this document in order to take cars from your port. To get the vehicles of your choice you need to do full payment. Do not think its lengthy process and get bored. This is the secure method of payment where both tasks are fulfilled.

Review of 2014 Mazda

The 2014 Mazda CX-5 is now offered with two engines, the entry 155-hp 2.0L four-cylinder engine and the new more powerful 2.5L four-cylinder engine that is also shared with the new Mazda6. The 2.5L engine generates 184-hp and 185 lb-ft. of torque, which is a nice 29-hp and 35 lb-ft. bump from the 2.0L engine. Even better, with the extra power, the fuel economy ratings don't take a huge hit. The 2.5L is mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission and the front-wheel-drive CX-5 is rated at 25/32, which is a barely noticeable difference from the 2.0L automatic, which is rated at 26/32. The all-wheel-drive CX-5 2.5L is rated at 24/30 mpg. The Mazda CX-5 is easily one of the best drives in the segment and now the 184-hp engine brings its power levels more in line with the CR-V and RAV-4. The CV-5's steering provides good feedback with it only feeling a bit numb at times. It has leather seats, heated front seats, navigation system with Pandora radio, back up camera, Bluetooth, Bose audio system and a blind spot monitoring system. The overall layout and feel of the interior was exactly what we expected and yielded few complaints. The seats were nicely bolstered, the driving position was spot on and the space behind the rear seat had more than enough space.

Detroit 3 raise alarm as yen weakens, aiding Japanese profits

Toyota Motor Corp., which last year overtook General Motors to become the world's largest automaker even as its profit margins lagged behind the industry, is riding a weakening yen that has Detroit executives concerned. The yen has fallen 17 percent against the dollar since Oct. 31 as Shinzo Abe, who became Japan's prime minister in December, advocated for the decline to improve the country's economy. The currency's slide gives Toyota and other Japanese automakers a financial gain on every car, which they can use to cut prices, boost ads and improve products. Morgan Stanley estimates the currency boost at $1,500 per car, while the Detroit automakers contend the figure is $5,700 per vehicle.

The yen's impact is already falling to the bottom line. Toyota last month raised its profit forecast by 10 percent for the fiscal year ending March 31, to 860 billion yen ($9 billion), a five-year high. That would more than double the previous year's profit and signal a complete comeback from the global recalls and 2011 Japanese earthquake that shook Toyota's standing as a leader in earnings, sales and quality."Ever since the new government took control, it feels as though Japan is filled with the spirit for economic revival," Toyota Senior Managing Officer Takahiko Ijichi said Feb. 5, the day the company boosted its forecast. "Some say that they can't feel any real substance in the whole 'Abenomics' phenomenon, but as a result, it's weakened the yen and boosted stock prices." Source: Automotive News

Owners turning off batteries, says study

Up to a third of electric car owners in Japan say they will not buy another battery-powered vehicle again. A study from business management consultancy McKinsey and Company released says the low cost of power, government cash handouts and a glowing test drive of the vehicle "seduced" many electric car owners in Japan to buy the car. However, the study shows that some owners were less well informed about electric cars when they made the decision to buy into the experience. The study identifies higher than expected electricity bills and the difficulty in finding public recharging points as key reasons why the experience for some soon sours. Instead, the people who were enjoying the electric car experience were "green enthusiasts" who "love EV technology for its low energy costs and comfortable driving experience".

Japan Machinery Orders Drop Sharply Amid Slow Recovery

Japanese core machinery orders fell 13.1% in January from the previous month, the government said, the first decline in four months, as Japan's economic recovery has yet to gain momentum amid a recession in Europe and slower growth in China. The fall was much larger than a median forecast of a 1.4% decline in a survey of economists conducted by the Nikkei and Dow Jones Newswires. The government predicted last month that capital investment activity would chalk up slight growth in January-March, but officials now say that would be difficult. The weak data come as expectations mount for an economic recovery with the arrival of a new conservative government in December. Machinery orders would have to grow 11.1% month on month in both February and March just to keep the levels of orders unchanged in January-March from October-December. Non-manufacturing sectors, which had grown briskly lastly on post-disaster reconstruction demand, also fell 6.3%, the second straight decline.

Review : 2013 Toyota Yaris

The Yaris is offered in two body styles: 3-door and 5-door liftback. U.S. lawmakers urge Obama to keep auto tariffs on Japan

Four dozen Democratic lawmakers on Thursday expressed concern about Japan joining free trade talks with the United States and urged President Barack Obama to maintain U.S. tariffs on Japanese autos and trucks if Tokyo does enter the negotiations. The plea came one day before Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to announce Japan's interest in joining talks on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a proposed free trade deal between the United States and 10 countries. That worries Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Chrysler Group, which fear losing more sales to Japanese imports. A U.S.-led push to finish the TPP pact by the end of this year adds to the carmakers' anxiety." While some have compared this challenge to the one we faced with Korea, the Japanese auto market is more impenetrable, the history of formidable barriers and imbalanced trade is longer, and the magnitude of the problem is far greater than with Korea," the group said."Despite being the third-largest auto market in the world, Japan ranks last among OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) members in terms of auto market import penetration, at 5.9 percent in 2012," they said. The lawmakers blame those low import numbers on a web of barriers, including currency manipulation, discriminatory taxes, onerous and costly certification procedures for foreign cars and unwillingness by Japanese auto dealers to sell foreign cars. Meanwhile, Japan is concerned about being pressured in the TPP talks to open its long-protected markets for rice and other politically sensitive farm products. In the aftermath of Abe's recent visit to Washington, there have been rumors the two sides have already struck a deal that would let the United States keep its auto tariffs in exchange for Japan's protecting some agricultural products. Toyota Planning EV Battery With Four Times More Power

Toyota is targeting a launch in the year 2020 for solid-state batteries in cars. Solid state batteries are considered more compact and more efficient, allowing a higher voltage to be packed into a smaller package thanks to the use of a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid one used in current lithium ion batteries. Compared to current lithium-ion batteries, they can deliver three to four times more power. Furthermore, following the use of a solid-state battery, Toyota plans to release a lithium air battery, which will prove to be even more powerful than solid-state batteries. Lithium air batteries are lighter and more energy dense, due to the replacement of current lithium cathodes, with ones that interact with oxygen. They are expected to offer a five-fold improvement in power compared to the current lithium-ion units. Both kinds of batteries are seen as the future of EVs thanks to the weight savings, and lower internal resistance, making for quicker charges. With a power density that is just 1/50th of gasoline, current lithium ion powered EVs are having a hard time in the market, and are a niche product. With these new solid-state batteries and lithium air batteries, the power density will be much closer to what is offered by gasoline.

Minivehicles with engines of up to 660cc accounted for five of the 10 best-selling vehicles in February. Toyota president seeks end to turmoil with management revamp

Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda cleared out the remnants of top management inherited when he took the helm in 2009 in a revamp to restore the fortunes of the world's biggest carmaker after years of turmoil. Toyota announced the retirement of the only three executive vice presidents not appointed by Toyoda and laid out a new, more clearly defined corporate structure with a greater focus on emerging markets. Three outside directors will join the board for the first time, including former General Motors Co. Vice President Mark Hogan, who's known Toyoda since they worked at a U.S. joint venture more than a decade ago. "It's been a gradual, steady process and this is just part of the change that's in his mind," said Edwin Merner, president of Atlantis Investment Research Corp. in Tokyo, which manages about $300 million in assets. "It's good for Toyota."The shakeup marks a turning point for Toyoda, 56, who took over after Toyota's first annual loss in almost six decades and whose efforts to remold the company his grandfather founded have been hobbled by mishaps and disasters. Although Toyota outsells all other carmakers, it's facing increased competition in the U.S. and has been losing out to GM and Volkswagen AG in China, the world's biggest car market.

Toyota makes first profit in Europe since 2007

Japanese auto giant Toyota’s European business is set to turn a profit in the 2012-2013 financial year after a five-year hiatus, a senior official said on Monday at the Geneva International Motor Show.“It will be the first time since 2007 that Toyota will be profitable in Europe,” Didier Leroy, head of the group’s European operations, told reporters. Over the first nine months of Toyota’s financial year which runs from April to the end of March the group said it had earned 209 million euros ($272 million).“We will return to profit in our automotive business in Europe,” Leroy forecast.“And there is no question, we will be profitable in 2013,” he added. Europe’s auto sector has been stuck in the doldrums owing to the continent’s economic crisis, with overall sales expected to fall by three percent this year to 11.5 million vehicles, including the key Russian market. Toyota is counting on the launch of new models notably hybrid cars to underpin its deliveries. Leroy said Toyota’s goal was to sell a million vehicles in Europe in 2015.

Japan's automakers shift plants to Mexico to export vehicles worldwide

Mexico's vehicle exports have surged as Japan's automakers, squeezed by a strong yen and high production costs, transfer more of their manufacturing there. In Aguascalientes, central Mexico, the boom of press machines can be heard early in the morning. It comes from an auto factory of Nissan Motor Co., one of the busiest factories among all its plants worldwide. According to its estimate, 80 percent of cars to be made in Mexico will be for export, making the country the third largest vehicle export base in the world in 2018, just behind Japan and Germany, which each export more than 4 million units a year.

Nissan’s female execs help drive strong sales

Among the 780,000 people employed in Japan’s auto industry, only three are women responsible for the rollout of new models. They all work at Nissan Motor Co. Mie Minakuchi is behind the newest Note hatchback, Nissan’s top domestic seller, which has seen sales triple in five months. Though it’s a laggard internationally in hiring women, Nissan leads Japan’s carmakers in the number of females in executive jobs. Women account for 6.7 percent of managers at the company, Japan’s second-biggest automaker. In the U.S about 1 in 3 auto industry managers are women, according to Catalyst, a nonprofit group in New York, while at Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. they account for less than 1 percent. At Japanese companies with at least 5,000 employees, women made up about 2.9 percent of managers, figures from the labor ministry show. Less than 5 percent of listed-company board members in Japan are women, one of the lowest rates among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to an OECD report. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his administration will support women at work by increasing the number of day care and nursery centers.

Honda to open first new Japan plant in 49 years

In July, Honda Motor Co. is planning to do something it hasn't done for almost 50 years: open a car factory in Japan. In 1964, just as the country was preparing to host the Olympic Games, Honda inaugurated a plant in Sayama, near Tokyo. That factory, along with two older ones, met surging Japanese domestic demand as the country prospered. And since the early 1990s, when asset prices collapsed, ushering in Japan's "lost decade," there has been little need for expansion. The new factory, with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles, is opening just as a weaker yen is making Japanese manufacturers such as Honda more profitable. Plans for the new plant were unveiled in July 2010 as part of Honda's efforts to build smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. In recent months, investors have flocked back to Japan, pushing the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average to levels unseen since 2008. Evidence of a broader recovery is growing as economists predict the economy will emerge from recession this quarter.

Top 10 Emergency Car Accessories For Your Japanese Used Vehicle

What are your driving essentials aside from your driver’s license? Any driving instructor and concerned parent will tell you to always be prepared and have emergency tools ready—you will never know when you might encounter a situation that would call for these essential items. Road accidents can happen to anyone, even those driving reliable Japanese used vehicles. Along with having emergency items on hand, you should also know how to use these efficiently, especially if you’re on your own. To help you through emergency situations, here are the Top 10 accessories your car should have.

Phone Charger, Headset, Mobile Power Bank – A phone headset allows you to call for help even while you’re driving.

Multipurpose Auto Power Pack – This 6-in-1 piece of equipment is a backup battery, jump-starter, compressor, inverter, USB and cell phone charger, and light source in one. This may be a bit bulky and heavy but it's worth taking with you everywhere.

Jumper Cables – If you don’t have a power pack yet, the next best thing to have is a pair of jumper cables. Passing cars may take pity on you and pull over to give you a boost but they might not have jumper cables—good thing you’re prepared and do have them in your Japanese used vehicle.

Knife – For emergencies when you have to protect yourself. You can also use it for opening soup cans, slicing an apple, or cutting loose a dog that’s been caught by its leash in some roadside bushes.

Satellite Phone – Even with the influx of technology, some parts of the world (including low-lying parts of the city) are still unreachable via mobile phone. There’s no network, no service, and no hope for you on that desert road unless you happen to have a satellite phone (and its charger).

GPS Unit – Emergency dispatch units would need to know where you are in order to help you. If you have no idea where you are (a bump on the head does that to you), hopefully you’ll remember that you have a GPS unit that doesn’t rely on memory in order to identify coordinates.

Food & Water Pack – Always keep some biscuits and fresh cool water on hand in your Japanese used vehicle and an extra liter or two in the trunk. The next burger joint may be miles away.

Multi-tool Pliers – How cool is a multi-tool? Very, if you get to try all twelve functions! Here’s to hoping you won't have to work to, though.

Tire Inflator and Sealer – If you don’t feel like spending time to change a tire in unfamiliar surroundings, the next best thing to do is to inflate the flat tire and temporarily seal it until you get home.

Emergency Kit – One of the most basic things to have if you’ll be spending time outdoors is an emergency kit which has first-aid provisions, a flashlight with extra batteries, a water bag, matches, siphon pump, tape, water and non-perishable food, flares, and a space blanket.

Having these emergency car accessories could spell the difference between driving home safely and spending a lonely night out on the roadside. Be smart before rolling out; make sure you have these in your Japanese used vehicle.

Uganda Road Safety and Regulations

First and foremost, you need to be aware of the governing Law lest you're taken unawares by a traffic policeman, and yet your ingnorance of the law is not a defense in Uganda Court rooms; Road safety in Uganda is Governed by the THE TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY ACT of 1970, This is Act which consolidates the law relating to road traffic.

In Uganda, you drive on the Right hand side of the road. The general speed limit on national highways is 100km/h and 65 km/h in urban built up areas, unless otherwise indicated.Make sure you have your local or international driving permit before you drive a car in Uganda. You need to be cautions while driving on Uganda roads and beware of the following :

Most inter-city transportation in Uganda is by small van or large bus. Many drivers of these vehicles have little training and some are reckless. Small vans and large buses are often poorly maintained, travel at high speeds, and are the principal vehicles involved in the many deadly single and multi-vehicle accidents along Ugandan roads.

Accident victims have included foreign nationals traveling in small vans and personal cars, passengers on motorcycle taxis locally known as "bodabodas" and pedestrians. Large trucks on the highways are often overloaded, with inadequately secured cargo and poor braking systems.

Alcohol frequently is a contributing factor in road accidents, particularly at night. Drivers are advised to take extra care when driving. Nighttime driving and road transportation should be avoided whenever possible.

Pedestrians often walk in the roads and may not be visible to motorists. Large branches or rocks in the road sometimes indicate an upcoming obstruction or other hazard. Highway travel at night is particularly dangerous, including the road between EntebbeAirport and Kampala.Traffic accidents draw crowds. Ugandan law requires that the drivers stop and exchange information and assist any injured persons. In some cases where serious injury has occurred, there is the possibility of mob anger. In these instances, Ugandans often do not get out of their cars, but drive to the nearest police station to report the accident, be sure to do the same. Source: UgandaAutosGuide

Uganda Driving Tips while your Car is moving

• Always drive with your headlights on, a car is visible for nearly 4 times the distance with it's headlights on even during daytime hours.

• When stopping at a stop sign, be sure to feel the car rock backward and spell S-T-O-P to yourself before proceeding.

• Always turn your head to look left, then right, straight ahead, then left again before proceeding.

• At Traffic Lights in Uganda: when a light turns green, look left, then right, straight ahead, then left again before proceeding through the light. Notice all vehicles and ensure that someone else is not going to run the light.

• Keep your eyes moving. Notice what is happening on the sides of the road and check behind you through your mirrors every 6-8 seconds.

• When driving on a two lane road that allows parking on the right, stay toward the center line to allow for room if someone were to open their door to exit their vehicle in front of your car. This forethought will help you from swerving to miss an opening door. If there is no parking allowed on the road position your car toward the right to allow for more room between you and oncoming traffic.

• Expect the other drivers to make mistakes and think what you would do if a mistake does happen. For example, do not assume that a vehicle coming to a stop sign is going to stop. Be ready to react if it does not stop. Never cause an accident on purpose, even if a pedestrian or another vehicle fails to give you the right-of-way.

• A rear-facing baby seat MUST NOT be fitted into a seat protected by an active frontal airbag, as in a crash it can cause serious injury or death to the child.

• Do not drive when you're tired as as you will greatly increase your risk of collision. To minimise this risk make sure you are fit to drive. Do not begin a journey if you are tired. Get a good night’s sleep before embarking on a long journey Avoid undertaking long journeys between midnight and 6 am, when natural alertness is at a minimum Plan your journey to take sufficient breaks. A minimum break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving is recommended If you feel at all sleepy, stop in a safe place. Do not stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway . The most effective ways to counter sleepiness are to drink, for example, two cups of caffeinated coffee and to take a short nap (at least 15 minutes).

• Your Vision; You MUST be able to read a vehicle number plate, in good daylight, from a distance of 20 metres (or 20.5 metres where the old style number plate is used). If you need to wear glasses (or contact lenses) to do this, you MUST wear them at all times while driving in Uganda. The Uganda Traffic police have the power to require you as a driver to undertake an eyesight test.

Right-hand Drive Fuels Revolution in Russia’s Far East

One thing that puzzles visitors to Russia’s Far East City of Vladivostok is the traffic.“Look, this car drives on the left,” two Chinese delegates to the recent APEC summit observed from a shuttle bus. They were left visibly perplexed when they saw that the next three vehicles all turned out to be right-hand drives. Russia drives on the left, but in Siberia and Russia’s Far East, Japanese imports dominate the car market, and right-hand drives are common. This does not just surprise visitors – it has created a significant political fault-line. The government has been steadily piling on the pressure, using tariffs and regulations to drive up the prices on imports, in an attempt to end the region’s automotive independence. Economic alienation slowly grew into political estrangement: the crackdown on an industry that created thousands of jobs triggered mass protests three years ahead of those seen more recently in Moscow. Four years ago, tensions reached boiling point, and riot police had to be flown into Vladivostok to restore public order. Today, 60 percent of vehicles in the Primorye Region remain right-hand drives. Source: Rianovosti

Regulations for importing used cars from Japan

The new regulations for importing used cars were announced on May 7th, 2012. The minister of Commerce in Myanmar, Mr Win Myint, has announced that all citizens who have a foreign currency account in some specific state-run banks would be allowed to import cars manufactured from year 2007 onwards with better conditions. It has been decided that taxes would be cut for all vehicles manufactured from year 2007 with smaller engine capacity. Thus, cars with engine capacity of 1350cc or less would be subject to 105% tax on the CIF value. Taxes would amount to 145% for cars with an engine size between 1350cc and 2000cc, and 165% for cars with an engine size bigger than 2000cc. Used Cars imported to Myanmar do not require a Road Worthiness Inspection (RWI).The new regulations give satisfaction to many Myanmar citizens who were angry that only sailors or foreign workers with foreign currency accounts had the right to import some Japanese vehicles. Fortunately, if the old car substitution rule proclaimed last year has been cancelled to be replaced by the new regulations, the holders of a permit for car substitution can still use it to import a car made between 1995 and 2006.
